I'd gladly displace any pair of Altecs with a pair of K2 S5500, K2 S9500, or Everest DD66000.JuBaLs?
While they're all still voiced outside of flat, they're much closer to accurate than any vintage horn based system i can think of. And yes, i've heard both versions of K2. My only opportunity to hear Everest was in an over-crowded demo room full of people that wouldn't shut up.

I heard a pair of jbl M9500 studio monitors which I believe are the predecessors to some of the K2 line, with a tc sounds lms 5400 sub, a dolby lake processor and 1000's of watts. It was surreal. I 've heard some nice systems but this was special. The weird thing is my best playback material sounds only good in his system, his best playback material sounds great with mine, but music I cant listen to and think are horrible recordings, sound good on his system. Back in the day, for us average blue collar fellas, Altecs came at a pretty high premium too.
